Hospital over Christmas?

I got a call yesterday asking if i wanted to change my surgery to December 14th. I would leave on Dec. 11th to go up there. Dec. 11th is my mom's birthday. Not a nice way to celebrate it! I am going to say no because as much as i want to be better, i don't think i would do very well spending christmas and new years away from family and friends and not being able to enjoy them!! NTM- I am not prepared to be in the hospital next week! So, it looks like we're still going to be going up there for the Jan. 11th surgery! It snowed today! First time this winter! :)

Date Change

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving! My favorite holiday! Yummy Food, naps, and more food!! I found out today that my surgery has been postponed until January 11th due to scheduling conflicts with Dr. Sutherland. We will now be going up on the night of Jan.8th. My first appt is at 7:45am on the 9th. I think i will also be having an endoscopic ultrasound that morning, as well, for research studies, so i'll be fasting the night before. I am hoping to have the day before the surgery free, so we can sightsee, shop, and just hang out with my family before going in the next day. Well, that's all I have for now! I'll be posting more when it gets closer to the surgery! Once i'm in the hospital, mom or james will be posting to keep everyone updated! Love to all! Happy Thanksgiving!

It's Scheduled!!

So, I decided to do this blog because when I talked to a lot of girls my age that went through this same surgery to get an idea of what to expect, it was hard for them to remember everything from when they had the surgery. That is one of the best things that Dr. Sutherland's office does for you, by the way, they give you a list of 10-12 patients to talk to about the surgery and to ask questions about your concerns and such. All of the patients gave me great information, but there was only one of the guys that had the blog and it was so helpful and full of information because it was done on a daily basis. Well, he was older and had some other diseases, so it made it harder to see what to really expect, so i'd like to have this to share with other patients when they get my information! Also, we have family around the U.S. and I though this would be a great way to keep everyone up to date and for me to see the stuff I don't remember at the beginning! :)

I first heard about Dr. Sutherland from my gastroenterologist, Dr. Sipe. He has been a lifesaver to me and makes dealing with this disease much easier. I don't have to make appts to get my prescriptions or when I need to fill him in on things that have changed. He has always been really good at listening to what I want to do about things and let's me kind of try things my way. Yes, maybe sometimes too much. I hate hospitals and I always try to talk him into letting me out about 24 hours after I go in, even though I need to stay there longer. If it wasn't for mom, it would have worked! :) But he's been great. he gave me a number of another girl around my age that had been to see Dr. Sutherland, so that is where it all started.

I called Univ. of MN on 9/26/07 , after talking with her, and had my appt on 10/2/07. If anyone has ever been through scheduling with a specialist, you know you usually have to wait months to be seen. So, we didn't want to pass up on this offer, and went ahead and drove the 11 hours up to Minnesota! We spent probably an hour and a half with him and he was just amazing! He listened to every word I said and even remembered it a month later when he wrote a letter to all my surgeons basically telling them that they were nuts for what they put me through, which was a nice bit of enjoyment on my end! :)

So, now, I found out today that my surgery has been approved by insurance and we are going to have it on January 4th, 2008!! We have to go up the night of Jan. 1st to be there for the two days of pre-testing and things, so hopefully I'll be able to sightsee and stay up really late so i'm exhausted when I go in, so I can stand to be in the hospital for a few more days! My goal is to be out before 2 weeks. They said generally 2-3 weeks in the hospital but I am convincing myself that I have to get up and walk around as much as possible so I can get out quicker! We'll see how well that works after the surgery! :) So far, so good! So 2008 should be a great new year!
